OSTEOPATHY What is it? Osteopathy uses various techniques as joint articulation and manipulation (clicking), massage and stretching. I will also share my knowledge to educate you as to why you may have started experiencing the problem in the first place and what you can do to change that. I may prescribe exercises, stretches or activities to counteract the tensions or weakness that are held within your body.
Can it help me? The list of conditions below is not an exhaustive list of problems that I address, treat and help so contact if you wish to discuss any other problems you may be having. Most people find that their main symptoms or level of pain have either dramatically reduced or gone within 4 to 6 appointments.
What to expect in your first appointment. During the hour you will be asked questions about your reasons for coming, your general health, medical care and medication which will be recorded in your case notes and kept confidential. You will be asked to remove some outer clothing for the examination and treatment of the area as well as any other related areas. Usually a postural assessment will be carried out , so if you would feel more comfortable you can bring loose shorts to change into for the appointment.
You will be asked to do some simple movements to assess posture, strength and mobility. You may be checked for signs of any underlying serious conditions. If necessary you may be referred to your G.P for further investigations. However, if appropriate you will have ‘hands-on’ treatment the first appointment which will be specifically tailored for you. You will also get self-care advice as to what you can do to help yourself at home.
A treatment plan will be discussed with you, so you know what the treatments may achieve and how many sessions it will most likely take before improvement should be felt. It is quite normal to feel a little sore or achy after treatment but this should last no more than 24-48 hours.
Subsequent appointments: Are a shorter version of the initial visit, where you will be asked about changes that you have or have not experienced, have a re-assessment of the problem area along with further treatment.
